Cleveland's Department of Finance and Administration received the prestigious Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. The award was presented to the budget officers from all departments during the regular meeting of the city council.

It is the 17th consecutive year city staff has received this award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.
The GFOA is an association of professional budget preparers.

A panel of independent reviewers judge whether the budget documents prepared for the current fiscal year, meet the rigid standards set by the GFOA. Since 1999 the reviewers have said our city's budget officers have met those goals each year.

As a GOFA official said in a letter to the city, this award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting.

The award tells city taxpayers the municipal government is a good steward of their dollars.

The award also reflects the long hours of hard work by our department heads and budget officers. They perform a vital task for the city, creating a budget document of clarity and precision for city officials to consider. And it's a task that must be repeated each year.

Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland said, “The fact that Cleveland has been recognized with this award for so many years likewise reflects the experience, talent and expertise of this special group of people in city government.”

He said, “They are committed to serving the public. That commitment is shown in other ways too. On New Year's Eve, for instance, the finance office stays open for citizens seeking to pay their taxes before the end of the year. The finance office recently worked out the details for the city council to authorize partial monthly tax payments; a convenience some citizens have requested.”
