The Tennessee Medical Association has announced it will fully support Insure Tennessee, Governor Bill Haslam’s plan for extending subsidized health insurance coverage to more low-income Tennesseans. The TMA Board of Trustees voted in favor of supporting the governor’s plan during its quarterly meeting on Jan. 17.

“A cornerstone of our mission is to help make accessible, affordable medical care a reality for Tennessee patients. Insure Tennessee supports that vision,” said TMA President Dr.
Doug Springer.

The TMA adopted policy in 2013 supporting access to affordable healthcare for all Tennesseans.

“Expanding health insurance can improve patients’ access to quality care, naturally leading to a healthier population, and a higher quality of life in our state,” said Dr. Springer.

“We appreciate the governor's attempts to develop a Tennessee-specific plan that promotes personal responsibility and patient engagement. We support the Governor’s proposal that includes innovative incentives and cost-sharing measures to encourage healthier choices, improve Tennessee’s health rankings and help contain costs.

“We join the governor’s office and the Coalition for a Healthy Tennessee in urging state lawmakers to approve Insure Tennessee during the special session of the General Assembly in February.”
