Walmart Grocery Opens Wednesday In Fort Oglethorpe

  • Tuesday, January 20, 2015

A new Walmart Neighborhood Market is opening Wednesday in Fort Oglethorpe, following a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store is at 1155 Battlefield Pkwy. and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The store will provide Fort Oglethorpe residents with an assortment of merchandise including fresh produce and meats, frozen foods, groceries, fuel and pharmacy.

Customers can shop additional items including toys, gifts, electronics and home decor on Walmart.com through Walmart pickup, which will offer free shipping to the Fort Oglethorpe Walmart Neighborhood Market. They can also use Walmart’s new Savings Catcher receipt comparison tool, which looks at other top retailers’ local ads and gives customers an eGift card for the difference if a competitor’s offering is lower than the price they paid at Walmart. Savings Catcher is available through the free Walmart mobile app.

“We look forward to bringing this new store concept to Fort Oglethorpe, giving customers convenience and affordability, all while taking care of their everyday needs,” said store manager Casey Robertson.

The new store offers produce and a full line of groceries from brand names, including organic selections. By working with growers Walmart is able to provide farm-grown quality produce at added convenience and low prices, said officials. There is also a wide variety of meat and bakery selections, and local favorites such as Little Debbie snacks.

The new store is approximately 41,000 square feet. In addition to groceries, the store features health and beauty aids, pet products and cleaning supplies, as well as a drive-through pharmacy. Fort Oglethorpe residents can transfer prescriptions and order refills on the go with the Walmart mobile app for iPhone and Android.

The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. Ms. Robertson began her Walmart career in 2003 as an assistant manager.

“We are thrilled to have a Walmart Neighborhood Market come to Fort Oglethorpe, as Walmart has been a huge asset to our city,” said Fort Oglethorpe Mayor Lynn Long. “Our history with Walmart goes back to 1990, opening up a commercial corridor that would not have been possible without the retailer.  Fort Oglethorpe residents are excited about the added jobs and about the convenience of getting in and out with this new store format."

The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of grants from Walmart to local community groups.  In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Georgia donated approximately 29.6 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2014, or the equivalent of 24.6 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $54 million in fiscal year 2014 in Georgia alone.
