Grover “Bat” A. Masterson, 86, of Brevard, North Carolina, died peacefully at home on January 19, 2015. He was surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.

A native of Chattanooga, he was born on Aug. 9, 1928. He attended Central High School and was a noted high school, AAU and amateur Golden Gloves boxing champion. In 1993, he was inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame.

Mr. Masterson attended the University of Virginia on a boxing athletic scholarship and was a DuPont academic scholarship recipient, graduating in 1951 with a BS in Commerce. On Feb. 26, 1952, he married UVA Nursing student, Barbara Sue Templeton, in The University Chapel.

After university, he was awarded a regular Army commission and served in Alaska during the Korean War. Following military service, Mr. Masterson worked for DuPont in Chattanooga Wilmington, De., and Brevard at the Photo Products plant for 26 years as a production supervisor and safety supervisor in senior management.

Together with Barbara, Bat raised their three children in Brevard, a “perfect little town.” Some of his favorite times were watching his children play sports and spending time with his grandchildren. An athlete by nature, he enjoyed an active retirement over thirty years – traveling, golfing and hiking in his beloved Pisgah National Forest. He was one of the founding members of Glen Cannon Country Club in 1965.

Mr. Masterson was predeceased by his father and mother, Carl Greene and Willie May (Scoggins) Masterson, and brothers, Douglas and Jerry D. Masterson, of Chattanooga.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara; daughter, Gail Masterson, PhD of Brevard, and sons, Norman Masterson, PharmD and wife Lisanne of Brevard and Lieutenant Colonel David Masterson USA (Ret) and wife Carla of Charlottesville; granddaughters, Jordan Masterson, PharmD of Asheville and Kendall Masterson of Richmond, and grandson, Casey Cooper of Brevard; and brother, Carl G. Masterson, Jr. and wife Dee, sister, Aline Reno and husband Robert, and sister-in-law, June Masterson of Chattanooga.

His going was sheltered and welcome assured. We will surely miss him.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at a future date in the Garden of Remembrance at the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church for the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Transylvania Hospice, P.O. Box 2440, Brevard, NC 28712.
