Jesse Lloyd Cox, 87, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at Chattanooga Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.

Lloyd was born in Sale Creek, TN. During World War II, he and several buddies decided to interrupt their education at Notre Dame High School to do their part in the war. In the Navy he loaded shells into the 5-inch gun aboard his ship, LSMR 521 (Landing Ship Medium Rocket). After the war, he returned to Notre Dame where he excelled in all sports. Lloyd fell in love with the water in the Navy which led to a passion for sailing. He crossed the country with his family for decades as a top competitor in regattas, winning more trophies than he could count. In the past two years alone he sailed in over 50 races locally at the Privateer Yacht Club where he has been a member for over 50 years and a Past Commodore. Lloyd also enjoyed coastal sailing, spending many years cruising the East Coast and Bahamas aboard his cruising sailboat, Fador. He was also Past Squadron Commander of Chattanooga Sail and Power Squadron.

As a self-employed business owner he operated the Acme Engraving Company his entire career.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Walter H. Cox and Abba Cox, his first wife, Elizabeth Lowry Cox, and Molly Hearn.

Survivors include his beloved dog, Hobo; sons, Jack Cobb, David Cox (Trish), Daniel Cox (Terri), and daughter, Cathy Peacock (Randy); grandchildren, Christina Boydston (Clay), Jacob Hindman (Mary), Jessica Crossman (Steven), Claire Young (Alex), Daniel and Elise Cox, Caelan Cox and Jesse Cox; great-grandchildren, Kennady Cox and Bryson Young.

Funeral services will be at held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David McNabb officiating.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Feb. 1, from 1-4 p.m. and on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be his fellow sailors from the Privateer Yacht Club.
