Everett, Malone J., Jr.

World War II Veteran Was Successful Insurance Agent And Avid Golfer

  • Saturday, January 31, 2015

Malone J. Everett, Jr., died peacefully with his loving family surrounding him on January 31, 2015.

In living his life, Malone was the epitome of the axiom, “It’s your attitude, not your aptitude, that will determine how high you will fly in life.”

Malone was preceded in death by his parents, Malone J. Everett, Sr. and Ozier Belle Everett; his loving wife of 67 years, Virginia Hicks Everett; and sisters, Oma Thankful Everett Daugherty and Margaret Everett Tucker.

Malone was a veteran of World War II and served with distinction in the battle of Normandy and the European Theatre. At the young age of 18, he was promoted to first sergeant of his company, a rare feat for someone of that age.

Upon returning home, he matriculated at the University of Chattanooga where he was one of the founding fathers of the Delta Theta Chapter of Sigma Chi, a distinction he cherished his entire lifetime. The values that Sigma Chi was founded on meshed precisely with Malone’s and he diligently adhered to them. During this time he and Virginia began dating and were married soon after.

Malone went in to the life insurance business with The Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company and was one of the premier agents for years before becoming the company’s local general agent. Malone was the architect of the Chattanooga agency, building it into the finest agency of its size in any company in the entire United States. He always credited his agents and staff for this accomplishment.

Malone was an avid golfer and even caddied for Bert Greene on the pro tour.  He was also very involved with his beloved City High School class of 1944. He loved his classmates so much and was instrumental in keeping their reunions alive. So instrumental in fact, that in 2009, his classmates awarded him the honorary title of Mr. CHS.

One of the highlights of Malone’s life was that he was the first male student of Girls Preparatory School, taking a class from then Headmaster, Randy Tucker.

Malone is survived by his sons, Douglas N. Everett, (Penny), David M. Everett (Vicki); grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth Everett, Alexis Everett Hedges (Miller), David Malone Everett, Tabitha Everett Waller (Dillon), and Thomas Everett.

The family would like to thank our caregivers, Adrian, April, Kandace, Krystal, Robin, and Hospice of Chattanooga for their compassionate, loving, and professional care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Delta Theta (Sigma Chi) House Corporation, University of Chattanooga, the Book of Remembrance, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, or The Girls Preparatory School, (GPS) in remembrance of Randy Tucker.

As Gin Gin did before him, Malone has donated his body to science.

A celebration of his life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 3 p.m. with visitation in Key-Andrews Hall immediately following.

Interment of ashes will occur at a later date.
