Dr. Martin Ringstaff, Autumn O’Bryan, and the Cleveland City Schools Board of Education announce the hiring of Scott Cummings as head coach of the Cleveland High School Blue Raider Football Team.

Cummings was previously head coach for the West High School Rebels in Knoxville.  He led the Rebels to a Class 5A State Championship and a 14-1 season during 2014.

Director of Schools Martin Ringstaff said, “We are thrilled to welcome Coach Cummings to Cleveland.  He embraces the values and direction of Cleveland City Schools.  Coach Cummings will build on the growth that the Blue Raiders have experienced in the last three years and continue our tradition of excellence.”  Cleveland High School Principal Autumn O’Bryan said, “Today is a great day for Cleveland High School. I have no doubt that Coach Cummings will continue the momentum in our football program. We are excited to welcome Scott, his wife, Amy and their boys, Caden (11) and Connor (9), to the Blue Raider family.”

As head coach at West for the past twelve years, Coach Cummings is the winningest coach in West High School history; he won the Prepxtra Coach of the Year two times as well as region coach of the year three times.  Under the direction of Coach Cummings, the West Rebels have won 21 post season games, never losing a first round playoff game.  He led the Rebels to the state semi-finals in 2010 and 2011; they were the state runner-up in 2013 and won the state championship this year.

Scott Cummings said, “I am very excited to join a community that cares about developing the student into a well-rounded adult.  Cleveland City Schools is passionate about its schools with the high school as the centerpiece.  I look forward to being a part of Cleveland High School which has seen success on many levels.  I look forward to growing and working with great leaders such as Dr. Ringstaff, Mrs. O'Bryan, a passionate athletic director like Eric Phillips, and middle school leadership that sees the importance of programming success.  My family is thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the Cleveland community.”

CHS Athletic Director Eric Phillips stated, “I am excited to have Scott Cummings join our athletic team and lead our football program. Scott is a proven winner, a program builder, and a player developer. He understands the value of education in the classroom as well as the education taught on the playing fields.  His exceptional leadership blended with our rich tradition will lead to an exciting future for Cleveland Athletics.”

Coach Cummings will start at Cleveland High School the first week of February.
