The brother of a 1997 murder victim in Chattanooga testified Tuesday that when he opened her car door soon after she disappeared "one of the awfullest smells come out of that car." He said it was an odor of "something you use to clean a car to cover up something."

Kenneth Witherspoon said at the time he felt like Adolphus Lebron Hollingsworth "may have my sister tied up or something. He was real bad."

The witness said he went looking for his sister after she did not show up to pick up her children at day care. He said Hollingsworth told him, "I've been looking for her too." He said the family had no further contact with Hollingsworth.

The  jury in the courtroom of Judge Rebecca Stern also heard from Wesley Carr, the son of victim Victoria "Vicky" Hollingsworth. He said he witnessed Hollingsworth throw gasoline on her and throw keys at her.

The panel is hearing the "cold case" murder that took 16 years for an arrest to take place.

Homicide detectives last January announced they had been able to make an arrest with the help of TNT Productions, charging Hollingsworth, the victim's estranged husband, with first-degree murder.

In 1997, Ms. Hollingsworth had separated from her husband, and she and her two children were living with her parents on Duncan Avenue when she went missing.

Police earlier said, "It was obvious that she was missing under very suspicious circumstances and would not come home alive."

Over a year and a half later, police finally discovered her body on Billy Goat Hill. Forensics experts discovered a mark on her mandible that indicated a stab wound to the neck; this was determined to be the cause of death.

After years of investigation with little new information, producers from the TNT show "Cold Justice" heard about the case and approached the Chattanooga Police Department.

Hollingsworth was living in Amarillo, Tex., at the time of his arrest. He had married again.

Hollingsworth is under $200,000 bond.
