Dalton State Athletic Director Derek Waugh announced Thursday that Georgia United Credit Union (“Georgia United”) is a new, major corporate partner.

Waugh said the credit union will be the official sponsor of Dalton State’s burgeoning intercollegiate Cheer and Spirit Squads. The squads will be known as “The Spirit of Dalton”.

“The support exceeds $10,000 per year to the cheer program which provides scholarships to over 25 student-athletes who have volunteered and appeared at over 40 local events in their short history,” said Waugh.

“The competitive cheer squad is also preparing to compete in the National Championships in Daytona Beach this spring.”

Georgia United has over 130,000 members in the state of Georgia and they are a major presence in Dalton through their branch at 605 Calhoun Street.

“Our team members are so excited to be sponsoring Dalton State’s cheer squad,” said Georgia United President and CEO Dalton, Debbie Smith. “This unique opportunity allows us to be a small part of spreading joy in the Dalton Community through these student athletes.”

The “Spirit of Dalton” squad will appear in upcoming Georgia United Credit Union sponsored events, including the Susan G. Komen “Wash Me Pink” Color Run in March.

“We look forward to a long partnership and representing Georgia United in a very positive way,” said DS Spirit Coach Robyn Pursley. “Our men and women take great pride in representing our institution and the community and I love now being known as “The Spirit of Dalton”. That really is what we strive to be.”

Georgia United Credit Union, Coca-Cola United of Chattanooga and FSG Bank have recently joined in promoting the Dalton State brand and are supporting student-athletes at Dalton State on a yearly basis.

“We continue to be blessed with amazing community and corporate support,” said Waugh. “Our cheer and spirit squad puts in a lot of work and are unsung heroes with all they do in the community and I am thrilled that Georgia United wants to support the team as a whole.”
