Mark Spangler, 26, was pepper sprayed, tased, and arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly hit a police officer in the face and resisted arrest.

The officer said that he responded to a call about a possible assault at the Raceway on the 7000 block of Highway 153 and found the defendant standing outside the entrance, talking on his phone.

According to the arrest affidavit, the defendant was acting abnormally, blocking another man who was later identified as an off duty Soddy Daisy officer from entering the store.

The defendant would not respond to the officer’s questions, and after several attempts to communicate, the officer told the defendant to put his hands on the wall for a pat down.

The officer said that Spangler laughed, threw his phone, and punched him in the face.

Another responding officer arrived in time to see the incident and with the help of the off duty officer, he was taken to the ground.

Spangler continued to resist arrest so an officer pepper sprayed him, but it did not seem to have an effect. He was then tased, which similarly seemed to have no effect.

Eventually, additional officers arrived on scene and the defendant was taken into custody. After a search, he was found to have a white crystalline rock and a small hollow plastic tube tied with string.

Spangler is currently charged with assault on a police officer on a $3,000 bond.
