Cleveland State Hosts Middle School STEM Camp

  • Friday, October 2, 2015

Cleveland State Community College is hosting the first complimentary Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Summer Camp for middle school students in Monroe County. The camp, offered Oct. 12-16, is for 6-8 grade students and will be offered at Cleveland State’s new site at the Tellico West Conference Center located at 121 Grand Vista in Vonore, Tenn.  during Fall Break for Monroe County students. This hands-on experience will teach young students about science, technology, engineering, math, teamwork and communication skills in a fun and exciting way.

Over 300 children have participated in similar STEM Camps during the summer held on CSCC’s main campus.

Dr.

Bill Seymour, Cleveland State President, is pleased to announce the camp will be offered at no charge to the first 60 students that register. The camps usually cost up to $200 per student, but this camp is being offered compliments of Cleveland State Community College to Monroe County in an effort to increase awareness of focusing students on the importance of STEM-centric education and careers.

“The Lego Robotics STEM camp will enhance the camper’s 21st century workforce skills needed to succeed in manufacturing, robotics and other STEM related careers,” stated Rick Creasy, Executive Director of Workforce Development. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the children of Monroe County and an added value for local industries as it will help develop interest in a much needed area for workforce development.”

The STEM Camp features Lego Education NXT robot set that students will build. At the end of the camp, the students will be able to identify robotic parts and components; understand assembly processes, sensors, and movement of basic robotics basic movement and sensor application programs; understand advanced programming concepts and commands; apply and utilize creative applications for robotics and identify industrial robotic applications.

The camp will convene from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. each day. The students will all be served lunch, snacks and receive a camp T-shirt. Registration applications are being accepted online at mycs.cc/stem until October 6.  For more information, contact Continuing Education Coordinator Lee Ann Lowe at (423) 473-2270.
