Mocs Volleyball Falls In Five-Set Battle With UNCG

  • Friday, October 23, 2015
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team dropped a five-set battle to UNCG Friday in Greensboro, N.C. UTC is 18-4 and 7-2 in the Southern Conference.

"Because of our first half of conference play, we have to realize we are going to get all eight team's best efforts and fight throughout the second half," head coach Travis Filar stated. "We got UNCG's best tonight, and we didn't respond consistently enough."

Chattanooga and the Spartans split matches this season. The Mocs beat UNCG 3-1 on Sept.
25.

UTC lost the first set 25-18 and answered by winning the second 25-22. Despite having two set points, the Mocs lost the third frame 26-24. Chattanooga bounced back quickly to take the fourth 25-17 but fell 15-12 in the final set.

"We played with great effort, but we needed to be sharper with our focus when sets got tight," said Filar. "We were not passing and defending as well as we usually do but credit to UNCG. They worked extremely hard and played well."

Senior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) posted her sixth double-double of the season, racking up 13 kills and 18 digs.

Four Mocs earned double digits in kills and four with digs.

Junior Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) and senior Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) each recorded 15 kills. Junior Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) made 13.

Senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) led the back row with 22 digs. Freshman Rachel Petkosh (Merritt Island, Fla.) marked a career-best 19, and freshman Miranda Elpers  (Louisville, Ky.) followed with 10.

UTC is back on the road Thursday to face Mercer in Macon, Ga., at 6:00 p.m. The Mocs return home to square off with Wofford Oct. 31 at Noon in Maclellan Gym.
