Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger and Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke have proclaimed November as National American Indian Heritage Month for Hamilton County and the city of Chattanooga. The five DAR chapters of the Chattanooga area, Judge David Campbell, Nancy Ward, Chickamauga, Chief John Ross, and Moccasin Bend, are taking part in this celebration.
Native American Awareness Week began in 1976 and its recognition was expanded by Congress and approved by President George Bust in August of 1999 designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month.
The history and culture of our nation have been significantly influenced by American Indians and indigenous people. The contributions of American Indians have enhanced the freedom, prosperity, and greatness of America today. Their customs and traditions are respected and celebrated as part of a rich legacy throughout the United States.
In honor of National American Indian Heritage Month, community celebrations as well as numerous cultural, artistic, educational and historical activities have been planned.
The proclamations will remain on display at the Chattanooga Public Library during the month of November.
