Tennessee Names 2015-16 Principal, Supervisor Of The Year

  • Tuesday, October 27, 2015

A Washington County elementary school principal and Shelby County supervisor have earned top honors for their work in Tennessee education.

Peggy Greene, principal of Ridgeview Elementary School, was named Tennessee’s 2015-16 Principal of the Year. Greene helped open Ridgeview seven years ago, and since then the school has seen significant increases in proficiency in all subject areas and was recognized as a Reward School for 2014.

Sharon Griffin, a regional superintendent of Innovation Zone Schools in Shelby County, was named Tennessee’s 2015-16 Supervisor of the Year.

Griffin was responsible for creating a district-wide turnaround office to address the needs of all underperforming schools and has served in education for 24 years.

Both awards were announced Tuesday during a statewide conference for education leaders.

“These leaders represent excellence in their profession, and we are proud to have them serving the districts and students in our state,” said Education Commissioner Candice McQueen. “Strong leadership plays an integral role in student success, and it is our honor to recognize such dedicated individuals in Tennessee education.”

The annual Principal of the Year and Supervisor of the Year awards recognize administrators who have helped provide educational opportunities for Tennessee students through their leadership, programs, and vision. Green and Griffin were among nine principals and nine supervisors selected as regional finalists after being nominated by their peers for the title.

The winners for each grand division were also recognized Tuesday.

Greene was named the Tennessee Principal of the Year and East Grand Division Winner. Todd Campbell, principal of Independence High School in Williamson County Schools, was named the winner for the Middle Grand Division. Tim Haney, principal of Peabody High School in the Trenton Special School District, was named the winner for the West Grand Division.

Griffin was named the Tennessee Supervisor of the Year and West Grand Division Winner. Jennifer Brown, supervisor in Dickson County Schools, was named the winner for the Middle Grand Division. Stacia Lewis, supervisor in Sevier County Schools, was named the winner for the East Grand Division.
