Ethan Pettit, Isaac Johnson and Nate Mackey all scored to lead the Covenant men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at LaGrange in USA South action on Saturday night at Panther Field.
The three goals sets a season-high for Covenant as the Scots move to 3-5-1 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 2-0-1. LaGrange remains winless on the year at 0-10 overall and 0-4 inside the USA South.
Covenant scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead entering the break. Ethan Pettit registered his first collegiate goal in the 19th minute of the play giving the Scots a 1-0 advantage.
Johnson made it 2-0 in the 39th minute as he found the back of the net, assisted by Mackey. The goal for Johnson was his third of the year.
In the second half, Covenant extended its lead to 3-0 in the 63rd minute. Mackey worked his way through the LaGrange defense and put the shot away for his first career score. The assist earlier the match was also the first in Mackey's collegiate career.
LaGrange sliced into its deficit with a goal in the 78th minute off the foot of Miguel Martinez. The Panthers would have two more looks at the net, but one attempt went high and the other was saved by Scots keeper Daniel Kubin to protect the two-goal lead.
Kubin made four saves on the night. LaGrange keeper Cory Aycock made two saves in the loss.
LaGrange held a 10-8 edge in shots, but each team took five shots on goal. Pettit had three of Covenant's eight shots on the night.
