Welcome The Bike Lanes - And Response

  • Sunday, October 4, 2015

In just the last week, I’ve driven from North Chattanooga to downtown using North Market numerous times.  I’ve timed it and it has added no extra time to my commute.  In fact, cutting North Market down to one lane slowed folks down and made me feel safer while driving, which is actually the point of the road project.

On top of that, I saw an adorable family biking together using the new bike lane which made me feel great about my hometown.

Then I easily found on-street parking around the Majestic area both times I needed it over the weekend.  No problems whatsoever.  And quite frankly, when was the last time anyone saw congestion on Broad Street?  It was six lanes and never traffic.  Now it’s down to four lanes and hopefully, once the protected bike lanes are finished, we’ll see more traffic of the bike and pedestrian variety (which would be a welcome change for the southern end of Broad Street between 5th and MLK).

Plus it's great for the tourists who, let’s remember, spent almost $1 billion here last year. Let’s face it people, tourists and residents of Chattanooga like to park their car and walk, ride bikes, and take the electric shuttle to where they need and want to go. We should be encouraging this, not complaining about it.

Yes, we should all rejoice, yet, have you counted all the people whom make up what you're talking about?

I love the idea of bikes lanes, but oh, my gosh, have you seen the bike lanes on Shallowford? (I get a chuckle because even Google can't spell Shallowford). The green paint is slick for out-of-towners.

What is wrong with you people? This is a safety hazard. And that is the least of my worries.
