A 16-year-old Baylor School student died after a cardiac incident at a pool on Monday afternoon.

Sumner Smith died in the incident on campus.

The student was taken by ambulance to Erlanger.

Baylor's Barbara Kennedy said it happened during a routine swim practice. He was found unresponsive in the pool.

Counselors were being provided on the Baylor campus on Tuesday.

News media were told not to come on campus to respect the privacy of the students.

The school website released this statement:

"We are grieving as a school family about Sumner Smith’s tragic death Monday, Oct. 5.

"A member of the class of 2017 who enrolled in Baylor as a sixth grader, Sumner was a well-loved member of the student body. He was a member of the Baylor swim and dive team but also tried many other sports and activities during his six years as a student. In Middle School he also played the clarinet in the band and ran cross country and track. When he entered the Upper School he continued to swim and dive, but also ran cross country and played junior varsity lacrosse.

"In a statement to parents, Headmaster Scott Wilson shared that the Baylor community gathered in the Alumni Chapel Tuesday morning. “ We were blessed and comforted by the words and presence of our Chaplin, the Rev. Dan Scott, and Dr. Herbert B. Barks, Jr., retired Baylor headmaster and Presbyterian minister."

"Although this is truly a sad time for Baylor, the school family is a source of great strength and comfort. School counselors continue to provide support for students, and we ask that you keep the Smith family in your prayers. We will communicate information about services as soon as we know more."
