Chattanooga Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match To Furman

  • Friday, October 9, 2015
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team dropped a nail biting five-set match to Furman in Greenville, S.C. UTC moves to 15-3 and 4-1 in Southern Conference action, while the Paladins are 5-1 in league play.

"I have to give credit to Furman," head coach Travis Filar stated. "They made more plays than we did when it mattered most and found ways to win those tight sets."

Despite losing the first two sets (27-25, 25-22), Chattanooga fought back to win the next two frames (25-22, 27-25), even saving three match points in the fourth.
UTC lost a tight fifth 15-12.

"I'm extremely proud of the toughness we showed after going down 2-0 and pushing the match to five sets, but we could have been a little sharper in our defense," said Filar.

Senior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a strong night after racking up 15 kills, a .500 attack percentage, and four blocks. Five Mocs hit double-digits in kills, including senior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) who recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs.

Sophomore Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) posted a personal-best 60 assists and helped set the Mocs for a .313 hitting percentage.

Leading the back row, senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) recorded 32 digs. Freshman Miranda Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) followed with 17 digs and paced the squad in service aces at three.

"This will be a great learning opportunity as we continue to drive through our conference season and play Saturday at Citadel," explained Filar. "I know our team will respond in a great way."

Chattanooga squares off against The Citadel Saturday at Noon in Charleston, S.C. Live stats and video links can be found on the volleyball schedule page at GoMocs.com.
