The Signal Mountain Council did not go along with a movement to allow smaller lot sizes within the city limits.
At a council meeting on Monday night, Councilman Robert Spalding made a motion for a vote on the ordinance. But he failed to get a second.
Afterward, Councilman Spalding said he opposes the measure, but wanted to get a unanimous no vote on it. He said the thought the issue should be resolved instead of not coming up for a vote.
Others on the council are Mayor Dick Gee, Vice Mayor Bill Wallace and Councilmen Bill Lusk and Chris Howley.
The topic has been under discussion in recent months.
The town conducted two open house meetings to provide information about proposed zoning ordinance changes. Under certain conditions, the changes would allow lots that are less than one-half of an acre to be created.
The meetings were Sept. 29 and Oct. 12.
In another matter, Tennessee American Water Company officials wanted to have two more open houses in December in support of their effort to supply water for the town.
