Students Work To Inspire Reading And ‘Bookish’ Gift Giving

  • Thursday, November 12, 2015

Jadyn Snakenberg and her fellow Hamilton County student advisors are taking a “hands on” approach to promoting reading by donating books that can be purchased at affordable prices and given as gifts for the upcoming holiday season.

Ms. Snakenberg and other Hamilton County Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council members have spent the past several weeks collecting books from fellow students at area schools and will present and donate them to Chattanooga Goodwill Industries at the Council’s Nov. 13 meeting.

The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council meets at 4:15, Monday at the Hamilton County Board of Education, 3074 Hickory Valley Road.

With the support of its faculty advisors and the members of the Hamilton County Board of Education, the council undertook the community service project to encourage reading and to make books available and affordable to all families this holiday season.

Ms. Snakenberg is a senior at Central High School and the 2016-2016 president of the Student Advisory Council.  “We had a book drive last year, and it was a big success. We decided to do it again not only to promote reading and education, but since books make great gifts for kids, we wanted to make them available so parents could buy them at affordable prices at local Goodwill stores,” she said.

A Goodwill donation truck will be on site for the Monday Student Advisory Council meeting. School board members have also been invited to attend the council meeting for the presentation.
Dennis Brice, Chattanooga Goodwill president and CEO, noted that the student partnership is a great fit for Goodwill programs and services.

“Donations of all kinds, including books, support our mission services,” Mr. Brice said.
