An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and detectives with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the indictment of a Beersheba Springs man on charges of reckless homicide and felon in possession of a firearm.

At the request of 12th District Attorney General J. Michael Taylor, on Sept. 27, TBI special agents, working with Grundy County deputies, began investigating a shooting death in a wooded area adjacent to 920 Northcutts Cove Road in Beersheba Springs.

Chad Killian, 44, was shot and subsequently died of his injuries. During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that Robin Smartt, Jr., who had reportedly been hunting with the victim when the shooting occurred, was the individual responsible for Killian’s death.

On Monday, the Grundy County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Robin Smartt, 45, with one count of reckless homicide and one count of felon in possession of a firearm. On Wednesday, Smartt was served with the capias on those charges and booked into the Grundy County Jail. He is being held without bond.
