DAR Regents’ Council Hosts Luncheon Honoring Veterans And Chattanooga Police Department

  • Friday, November 13, 2015

The Chattanooga DAR Regents’ Council hosted their annual joint luncheon for the five Chattanooga DAR chapters and special guests on Wednesday, Veterans Day.   Emphasis was placed on honoring DAR veteran members, and all veterans, especially those from the Vietnam War.

The Chattanooga DAR chapters are partners of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, an organization with a primary focus of thanking and honoring the Vietnam era veterans.

Joye Duke, regent of the Chickamauga Chapter, presented an award of “Outstanding Community Service” to the Chattanooga Police Department which was accepted by Chief of Police Fred Fletcher.  She stated the award was “in recognition and appreciation to every police officer as they place themselves in danger on our behalf every day.  We thank them for their courage, vigilance, and service as they fulfill their daily tasks.  We especially thank those who responded to the horrible shootings of our military personnel in July, most likely preventing an even greater tragedy…. The award represents hundreds of citizens in our extended families.  We send our support and our continuing prayers for their safety each day.”

This year the DAR celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding.  Some of the junior members of the DAR chapters and some members of the Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution presented a fashion show, modeling clothing styles and presenting DAR history from the past 125 years.

Special guests included Tennessee State Regent Susan Thomas; Executive Director Heather Green and Development Director Beth Cagle of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Grant, Ala.; Chief Development Officer Jason Eller from Tamassee DAR School in Tamassee, S.C.; President of the John Sevier Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Terry Siler; President Ashleigh Cook and Senior President Lori Cook of The Tennessee Society Children of the American Revolution; as well as DAR regents and members from chapters outside the Chattanooga area – Alexander Keith Chapter, Ocoee Chapter, Sarah Polk Chapter, and William Marsh Chapter.

The five Chattanooga DAR chapters are Chickamauga Chapter, Regent Joye Duke; Chief John Ross Chapter, Regent Teresa Rimer; Judge David Campbell Chapter, Regent Susan Lindsey; Moccasin Bend Chapter, Regent Barbara Fickley; and Nancy Ward Chapter, Regent Natalie Blackwell.  The Chairman of the Chattanooga Regents’ Council is Jan Owens Perry, Past Regent of the Judge David Campbell Chapter.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for the nation's children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 165,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world's largest and most active service organizations.
