Lee University professors Drs. Caroline Maher-Boulis, Jeneva Moseley, and Jason Robinson led a “speed learning session” at the Association for Middle Level Education conference in Columbus, Ohio.

The professors’ presentation, “BLT Math: Bringing Life to Mathematics through Real-World Problems,” resulted from a grant which was funded by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission through its Improving Teacher Quality Program for 2015. The program is a professional development initiative for teachers to increase their knowledge and competency in math.

“Having the opportunity to present at the AMLE conference was truly an honor for the grant team,” said Dr. Robinson. “In addition to meeting exceptional middle school educators from across the country, we also connected with future teachers who are currently pursuing degrees in middle level education. We look forward to providing exciting professional development opportunities for teachers in the future.”

The speed learning sessions, as part of the conference, are designed to bring together experts on different aspects of a specific topic. The 75-minute sessions are divided into three segments, allowing the participants to gain personal attention from the experts and information in a short amount of time.

Dr. Maher-Boulis is an associate professor of mathematics at Lee. Born in Sudan and educated for a time in Egypt, she came to the United States in the 1990s. She is also the coordinator of the mathematics internship program and director of the BLT Math summer camps.

Dr. Moseley is an assistant professor of mathematics at Lee. She has led in-service mathematics seminars for public school teachers and has presented at numerous conferences.

Dr. Robinson, an assistant professor of education at Lee, directs science camps along with his wife throughout the year, both in the United States and abroad. He has also spoken at multiple leadership conferences around the world.

The AMLE conference is designed for educators who work with 5th to 9th grade students. The annual event offers research-based practices and strategies for attendees.
