Medal Of Honor Heritage Trail Dedication Is Saturday

  • Monday, November 16, 2015

The National Medal of Honor Museum of Military History will dedicate the next three markers in its Medal of Honor Heritage Trail at the Bragg Reservation on Missionary Ridge on Saturday at 1 p.m.  The markers will honor 10 of 17 Medal of Honor recipients to include Lieutenant Arthur MacArthur (the first father/son recipient) during the Battle for Missionary Ridge on Nov. 25, 1863. Additional markers will follow in 2016 for the remaining seven recipients.

Those participating in the ceremony include Major General Bill Raines - U.S. Army (Retired); Jim Ogden, historian Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park; Linda Mines, Chattanooga and Hamilton County historian; Raymond Evans, author and anthropologist and Jim Wade, executive director of the National Medal of Honor Museum of Military History.

The colors will be presented by the East Ridge High School JROTC and the National Anthem will be sung by MSG Shaun Coker, U.S. Army (Retired).  There will also be a special Honor Guard of “Union Soldiers” (Re-enactors) led by First SGT John Culpepper who will present a 21 gun salute at the unveiling of the new markers.

The markers were made possible by the Benwood Foundation, the Signal Mountain Lions Club and the Signal Mountain Military History Group. Light refreshments will be served following the event.

The Medal of Honor Heritage Trail, when completed, will honor 33 recipients of the Medal of Honor awarded for actions during the Battles for Chickamauga and Chattanooga from September-November 1863. A book, Paths of Valor, telling their story, was commissioned by the museum in 2013 and is available on the website or at the Museum in Northgate Mall.  It details each of the recipients in the battles and includes the following: Battle of Chickamauga - nine recipients; Hospital - one recipient; Battle of Wauhatchie - one recipient; Battle of Lookout Mountain - four recipients; Battle of Missionary Ridge - 17 recipients; and Battle of Ringgold Gap - one recipient.

Additional markers will follow at Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga and Ringgold and will complete the trail in 2016.

For additional information contact Jim Wade, executive director, at 304-9834 or visit the museum website at www.mohm.org.
