Two Hamilton Heights basketball standouts, Ezekiel Balogun and Akia Harris, have officially signed scholarship papers to play college ball at The Citadel and Tennessee Tech University, respectively.

Balogun, a 6-foot-5-inch native of Nigeria, is a four-year member of the Hawks and a three-year starter and was swayed by the up-tempo style of play of Bulldogs first-year coach Duggar Baucom.

“EZ is an extremely athletic wing that can play a variety of positions and can defend any position on the court,” Baucom said.

“He can shoot 3-pointers, but can also finish and make plays above the rim.”

The Citadel is a member of the Southern Conference.

Said Duke Stone, Hamilton Heights headmaster: “We are extremely excited for Eziekel and the opportunities The Citadel will provide him. Ezekiel is our first four-year international student and for him to have this opportunity is indicative of his work ethic, not only on the court, but in the classroom.”

Harris, a 5-6 point guard who transferred from Girls Preparatory School after playing three years with the Bruisers. Harris averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 assists and four rebounds per game her junior season at GPS. She scored her 1,000th point last February and was selected a TSSAA Division II-AA All-Region and all-state player all three years.

“Akia is a wonderful student-athlete,” Lady Hawks coach Keisha Hunt said. “I am so excited to see Akia play on the next level, and I’m thankful to get the opportunity to coach her in her final year of high school.”
