Guilherme von Streber
Lee University student Guilherme von Streber was the recipient of the 2015 Crosby Scholarship, presented by Lee President Dr. Paul Conn during a chapel service.
The Crosby Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Dr. Henry Crosby, a close friend of Dr. Conn and his wife Darlia. Faculty members nominate a young man entering his junior year for the scholarship. The award recipient is then chosen from the nominations by a scholarship committee.
Mr. Von Streber, an international student and Spanish major, is from Minas Gerais, Brazil. He was raised in Paraguay and speaks three languages natively: Spanish, Portuguese, and Guarani.
“Guilherme has shown great seriousness and devotion to all academic challenges provided in our department and in my class,” said Dr. Alexander Steffanell, associate professor of Spanish. “As a student, Guilherme is rapidly stretching as a promising teaching scholar. He has always been characterized as a humble and hardworking young man.”
During his time at Lee, Mr. von Streber also spent a month in Barranquilla, Colombia, to volunteer with a local school. He was awarded a merit-based travel fund by the Oxford Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) for his work. He is president of Leetinos and a member of the Hispanic Honor Society. He has served as a coordinator of Intermediate Language Cafes, a student worker for Spanish faculty at Lee, and tutored in the Spanish Writing Center and Spanish Tutoring Center.
"I am always short of words when I try to describe how thankful I am to receive the Crosby Scholarship,” said Mr. von Streber. “To me, receiving such a prestigious award is a way of honoring my family, the Department of Language and Literature, and especially the memory of Dr. Crosby. I see that this is an encouragement and a challenge to keep pursuing academic excellence in all that I do at Lee University and beyond.”
