To celebrate the 2015 Chanukah season, Chabad of Chattanooga will be carving a giant ice Menorah at the Ice on the Landing rink. The Menorah, standing seven feet tall, will be constructed entirely of ice blocks.
On Dec. 10, Chabad of Chattanooga, an organization dedicated to spreading Jewish awareness and education, will host this unique candle lighting ceremony to promote Chanukah. The kindling of the Menorah symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.
Officials said, "This year the message of the Menorah holds special significance to the residence of Chattanooga. After our city came under attack on July 16, our bright skies were darkened by a black cloud. However our community came together as one and emerged brighter than ever.
"Chabad of Chattanooga together with Chattanooga Mayor Berke, Congressman Fleischmann, and Chief Fletcher will be honoring Officer Dennis Pedigo who was injured in the attack. Together we will light the giant Ice Menorah."
The ice Menorah will be sculpted by ice carvers, and placed in the center of the outdoor ice rink at Ross’s Landing. Participants will have the opportunity to skate around the Menorah, enjoy holiday foods and song before and after the ceremony.
This year’s Chanukah celebrations bring added significance as communities worldwide celebrate the biblical year of Hakhel, a once-every-seven-years opportunity to celebrate unity and learning. Throughout the year, synagogues and organizations are hosting communal gatherings for men, women and children dedicated to encouraging unity and brotherhood.
The event will be on Dec. 10, at 5:30 p.m. for the skate, and 6 p.m. for the lighting ceremony at Ross’s Landing, 100 Riverfront Parkway. Chabad of Chattanooga will present the ice Menorah and the candle lighting ceremony to spread the message of Chanukah and honor those who fight for a brighter future each day.
