The Southeast Regional Heart and Vascular Symposium will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 at The Chattanoogan.  The symposium is presented by CHI Memorial and The Chattanooga Heart Institute for primary care physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, interns and residents.  Continuing education units will be offered.

James de Lemos, M.D., will be the keynote speaker.  Dr. de Lemos is a professor of internal medicine in the division of cardiology at University of Texas  Southwestern Medical Center.
He is also the cardiology service chief at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, and associate director of UT Southwestern’s cardiovascular fellowship program.

Dr. de Lemos graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed an internal medicine residency at UT Southwestern, where he also served as chief medical resident.  He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine and served on the faculty at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston before returning to UT Southwestern to join the faculty.

“Dr. James de Lemos is one of the highlights of this annual cardiovascular symposium.  The goal is to share our enthusiasm for optimizing patient care by practicing evidenced based medicine.  Our cardiologists will review the data from population studies, basic science, translational medicine, and of course the latest randomized clinical trials as well as the recommendations from the latest US and European guidelines”, says Mark Thel, M.D., FACC, of The Chattanooga Heart Institute and symposium program director.  “Perhaps the most exciting news, that will also impact all of us, is from the NIH SPRINT Trial released last month that demonstrated a 20% reduction in total mortality by simply aiming for a systolic blood pressure of less than 120, rather than 140. I can’t think of a better way to spend a cold, rainy February day than with your colleagues at the cardiac symposium.”

Dr. de Lemos will speak on population screening for cardiovascular disease and cardiac troponin testing.  Other symposium topics include TAVR, peripheral artery disease, cardiac consequences of sleep apnea and more.
