Herman Leon Werndli, 86, of Chattanooga died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015.

Herman was a decorated veteran of the Korean Conflict holding the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army (Company I, 7th Regiment, 3rd Division).  He participated in the Wonsan – Hungnam Campaign and the First and Second Spring Offensive.  During his time in Korea, he was wounded in action and temporally blinded.

Retiring from South Central Bell after 35 years of service he was active with the Pioneers Club.  He was also a member of Brainerd Masonic Lodge No. 736.  Herman enjoyed many years of involvement with the National Campers and Hikers Association and the Tri State Loafers Camping Club where he was one of the original members.  He enjoyed camping and traveling in his RV with his special camping friends.  He had a gift for making enduring friendships wherever he happened to be.  His quick wit and sense of humor charmed friends and strangers alike.  His neighbors were especially dear to him.

Herman was an active member of the Tyner Church of Christ, especially enjoying  the Monday Morning Deacon’s Meetings and the fellowship and good works they were involved in.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Fay (Usher) Werndli, parents, Harry and Julia Mae (Fults) Werndli; and brother, Howard Werndli.

Survivors include his daughters, Denise Jones Werndli, Karen (Don) Gregory; grandchildren, Daniel Odell Gregory, Christina Gregory Little and Shelly Jones Davis; brother Jim Werndli, Maryville; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, in the funeral home chapel with Ministers John Cupp and George Cupp officiating.  Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
