The 2015 Sounds of Unity Celebration, under the theme, “Unity for the Community” will attempt to show the world how the body of Christ can come together in love and in solidarity. Music and the arts historically has served as an ambassador for gathering people from all walks of life to celebrate our commonalities instead of our differences.
Sounds of Unity is a spirit-filled music ministry that was founded in 2006 by Minister Marcellus Barnes for the community to unite and celebrate diversity and tolerance.
The choir consists of members from area churches all throughout Chattanooga. Currently, there are over 150 active members serving in the choir.
Time will be taken to celebrate African American heritage and leadership, and to honor community leaders who have made a significant difference within the African American community. Honorees have included radio personality Sister Willie McClendon, Minister of Music James Elder, State Representative Joanne Favors, distinguished composer, conductor and pianist Dr. Roland Carter, community activist James Moreland and Former Public Defender Ardena Garth-Hicks.
This year’s celebration will be held at Abbas House, located at 5208 Hixson Pike, on February 22 and will feature a city wide multicultural mass choir. This celebration will also be a live recording and will feature new music from Gospel and Contemporary Christian Artist, Marcellus Barnes.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Hermans Soul Food Restaurant on Brainerd Rd., Georgio's Men's Warehouse on Market street downtown Chattanooga and the Abbas House bookstore on Hixson Pike.
