Local 7th Grade Chess Player Wins 4th Place At State

  • Tuesday, February 17, 2015

Suhas Gummadi, a 7th grade student at East Hamilton Middle School, won 4th place at the Tennessee State Scholastic Chess tournament over the weekend.

There were 32 players who had qualified through four regional tournaments throughout the state.  Despite being the 20th seed overall, Suhas scored 4 upsets against his 5 higher rated opponents.  Suhas was also one of the younger participants in the Junior High Section as a 7th grader, since the section included everyone through 9th grade.

His success is significant, since historically the players from the Nashville and Memphis regions have dominated the state tournament.
