Lee University’s Wind Ensemble will be in concert on Wednesday
Lee University’s Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the semester on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center under conductor Dr. David Holsinger, professor of music at Lee.
According to Ddr. Holsinger, the concert leans toward the “memorial” side of music. The program opens with James Hosay’s Vietnam Memorial piece titled “Black Granite March,” followed by “Some Give All,” a composition by Holsinger which was commissioned by a community band in Colorado to honor a local young marine who was the first casualty of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The ensemble will also perform a ragtime by John Philip Sousa titled “With Pleasure,” a minimalistic work by Kenneth Lampl titled “The Echo of God’s Laughter,” and Jan Van der Roost’s “Puszta-Four Gipsy Dances.” The concert will close with Robert Jager’s “Esprit De Corps,” a piece originally written for the United States Marine Band.
Much of the program will be conducted by Dr. Holsinger, but he will be joined by Lee graduate student Timothy Linley, who is working toward a degree in wind conducting. Mr. Linley will be conducting Norman Dello Joio’s “Satiric Dances.”
“I think it will be a concert of music for everyone’s taste,” said Dr. Holsinger.
In addition to his university teaching, Dr. Holsinger spends time as a guest clinician, composer, and conductor throughout the United States, appearing at more than 60 major universities and colleges in the last decade and conducting high school honor bands in 37 states.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information about the concert or Lee’s School of Music, call 614-8240 or visit http://leeuniversity.edu/academics/music/.
