Elizabeth Lowe
Elizabeth (Buffy) Goldston Soyars Lowe of Lookout Mountain, Georgia, died peacefully at home on February 23, 2015, after a short illness.
She was the daughter of Robert Franklin Soyars, Jr., and Ann Elizabeth Goldston Soyars of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, formerly of Richmond, Virginia.
Buffy was born in Richmond, Virginia, on March 19, 1938. She attended The St. Catherine’s School until she moved to Lookout Mountain, Tennessee in the 8th grade. She enrolled in the Girls Preparatory School where she graduated in 1956, having been voted “Most Casual” by her classmates. She attended the University of Georgia where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority and then worked for the Society Section of the Chattanooga News Free Press. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal, on Lookout Mountain.
In 1962, she was accepted to the Parson’s School of Design in New York City where she planned to study fashion illustration, but she decided instead to marry Sam Lowe of Lookout Mountain. She raised two children and lived out the rest of her life there.
Buffy was known to many for her talent as a portrait artist, and the legacy of her work remains today in many homes near and far. She was also known for being a cook extraordinaire and for her wicked sense of humor; for her love of dark chocolate, bourbon, and animals of any kind; of Erma Bombeck, Lewis Grizzard, the movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age and Barefoot in the Park; of Michelangelo and Red Grooms; of dry, twisted or bawdy wit in others and of spontaneous clever puns. She was an amazing shot on the dove field, and she could pull off a game dinner that left people reminiscing decades later. Buffy added a unique and artistic flair to any space she inhabited.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Brunswick Lowe, III (January 22, 1999); her sister, Marshall Soyars Bright (May 29, 2002); her parents and her grandparents. She is survived by her two children, Elizabeth Soyars Lowe (Baltimore, MD) and Samuel Brunswick (Sameera) Lowe, IV, (Brentwood, TN) and three grandsons: Samuel Brunswick Lowe, V, Jameson Naifeh Lowe, and John Hamilton Lowe.
The family will receive guests at Wann Funeral Home on Friday, February 27 from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm, to be followed immediately by a graveside service at Forest Hills Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Buffy can be made to the charity of your choice or to The American Cancer Society, The National Brain Tumor Society, The Church of the Good Shepherd, or The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
