Chickamauga And Chattanooga National Military Park To Host Historical Moccasin Bend Hike

  • Friday, February 27, 2015

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a 90-minute historical hike to the Union defenses along Stringer’s Ridge at Moccasin Bend National Archeological District on Saturday, March 14 at 2 pm. Participants should  take the Manufacturer’s Road exit off Highway 27 and drive west, following the “Special Event” signs to the South Moccasin Bend parking area.

In the fall of 1863, Union soldiers found themselves dug in along Stringer’s Ridge, besieged by Confederates on Lookout Mountain.

Soon, life on Moccasin Bend turned quite difficult, especially once army rations were cut by three-quarters. As a result of their growing hunger, soldiers often ventured out to some of the remaining farm fields along the edge of the bend, placing themselves in considerable danger.  Was an ear of corn really worth the life of a soldier? Program participants will learn about the struggles of daily life on Moccasin Bend and why it became known as “Starvation Point” to many of the blue-clad soldiers stationed on this lonely peninsula.

As a reminder, comfortable, supportive footwear, appropriate clothing for the weather and water are recommended for this program.

For more information about programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, contact the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at (706) 866-9241 or the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center at (423) 821-7786.
