The Lee softball team rallied from three runs down to top Mississippi College, 4-3 in a nine-inning affair from a sun-splashed Cleveland High School on Monday afternoon.
The Lady Flames completed the sweep of the Choctaws to move to 16-10 overall and an even 7-7 in Gulf South Conference play. The loss drops Mississippi College to 13-8 and 8-6 in league play and marks its first series loss in conference action this season.
With the winning run on third and two outs in the ninth Lee junior Lexie Dean roped a grounder to third that ricochet off the Choctaw fielder to allow Bri Eichbaum to score and end the marathon contest.
Angie Hughes (7-6) went the full nine to earn the victory for Lee.
Hughes gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits. The junior struck out eight and worked around eight walks to lead the Lady Flames to victory.
The Lady Flames climbed back into the contest on a two-run homer by Kaylie Drew in the fourth inning. Drew has now gone yard in three out four games and leads the team with seven home runs.
Emily Dagnan tied things up in the sixth inning on a RBI double to right scoring Dominique Hannah. The balanced Lee offense featured eight hits by hit different players.
Carlie Sargent (9-3) went 8 2/3 innings in the circle for the visitors. She allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits. Sargent struck out five and walked just two batters.
Ashley Subervielle got the Choctaws on the board with a two-run double in the third inning. The third run scored on an error by the Lady Flames allowing Subervielle to score with two outs.
The Lady Flames will face another tough test this weekend as they welcome longtime rival Shorter University to Butler Field for a three-game weekend series. The conference battle opens on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Lee head coach Emily Russell will be in search of her 500th career win this weekend. The former Lee pitcher and 13-year coach has won 499 games since taking over the Lady Flame program in 2003.
