Ruth S. Monroe, 91, of Decatur, TN, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2015.

Born Aug. 19, 1923 in the Tranquilitty community of McMinn County, TN., she was the 6th of eight children born to the late N.E. and Mollie Shults. Ruth was a devoted wife and mother, and employee of Norman Wades’s store, a receptionist for both Dr. William Davis MD and Dr Craig Beard DDS when they had Decatur offices. This led to her interest in the medical field. In 1966, at 43 years of age, she attended Athens Vocational School and became a Licensed Practical Nurse, thus making her days as a nurse in the Physical Therapy Dept. of Athens Community Hospital for more than 25 years some of her most memorable times. She was an avid gardener as was shown by her immaculate summer time lawn. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Decatur.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, J.W. Monroe; siblings, Edna Kennedy, Neva Scroggins, Roy, Raymond, Olen, and Naomi Shults and Ina Coleman; granddaughter, Tina Wilson Foster; and grandson, Scotty Monroe.

She is survived by her children, Peggy Wilson-Boone and her husband Ken, Kathy Pierce and her husband Don and Terry Monroe and his wife Diane; grandchildren, Steven Wilson, Mark Wilson, Gina Herrell, Jay Pierce, Clay Pierce, Kasey Monaghan and Kevin Monroe; and great-grandchildren, Preston Foster, Madison Herrell, Blake Herrell, Kayla Monaghan, Kylene Monaghan, Tommy Monaghan, Will Monroe and Meredith Monroe.

The family is honoring her request for cremation and interment with graveside services on Saturday, March 21, at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Decatur at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jamey Davis officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Walnut Grove Cemetery Fund, 14108 N. Nopone Rd. Decatur, TN 37322.

Bowers Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
