Help Get Abby Home

  • Thursday, March 19, 2015

I cannot express how disappointed I am in McKamey Animal Center. They are well known in the community and the deeper I get into this story, the more shady their company is becoming in my eyes.

My friend’s mom has some medical issues due to an accident that happened several years ago. Due to medical expenses, the family is on a tight budget. They have had a little maltese puppy, Abby, since she was a puppy – she is now 10 years old. My friend’s mother had suspicion that the dog was getting sick, so she contacted McKamey to see if they could help. They told her that they would help, but in order for them to do so, she would have to sign her rights to Abby over temporarily so that they could treat her. It was verbally agreed that she would be allowed to get Abby back after medical treatment.

Abby is a part of the family and has been for her whole life. My friend’s mom went to see Abby every day. As it turns out, Abby had a clean bill of health, except she had glaucoma. This was such a relief to the family as you can imagine.  The mom went to pick up Abby and was told that she had been put on the “Rescue Waggin” and was on her way to Michigan. That is all of the information that they had.

This really bothered me because as a dog owner, my pets are part of my family, so I could not imagine anything like this happening…right in my own community. The Rescue Waggin is apparently an agency that works with Petsmart, but no one there knows anything. Also, no one at McKamey can or will give any information regarding Abby – other than they took her. They cannot provide a phone number or any alternate way for the family to get in touch with them to get their dog back.

I have spoken to both PetSmart and McKamey. It is just absurd because they act as if this mysterious van, who no one has any information on, drove up, picked up the animals, and fled into the night. I find this extremely hard to believe.

Abby is a full blooded Maltese, so she is easily adoptable – I personally feel that it all comes back to making money. This saddens me because how can an organization that is supposed to have such a great love for animals rip one from their home – the only thing that they have ever known?

It was suggested by the McKamey employee that I speak with their executive director regarding the situation, but of course she was on a conference call and couldn’t speak with me. I left her a voicemail asking her to call me back. Of course,  she has not.  I am trying to help this family get their stolen family member back. I am hoping that through the use of social media and local news, we can help this family get back what is rightfully theirs. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
