Covenant Softball Drops Two At LaGrange

  • Saturday, March 21, 2015
LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team could not get the bats going on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a pair of games at USA South foe LaGrange. Covenant fell 2-0 in game one before losing 4-0 in the series finale.

Morgan Lane had three of Covenant's six hits on the day and, in the process, extended her hitting streak to 13 games which ties a program record set by current Lady Scot Jordan Brett. Lane has hit safely in all games she has played in this season.

Covenant drops to 7-7 overall and 2-6 in league play, while LaGrange goes to 12-6 on the year and 7-5 inside the USA South.

Game 1: LaGrange 2, Covenant 0

In a pitcher's duel, LaGrange was able to scratch across single runs in the second and third innings and hold on for the 2-0 win.

Covenant starter Cris Gant (3-3) gets the loss, but pitched well allowing two runs, one earned, on just five hits in her six innings of work.
Gant walked three and struck out five.

LaGrange's Lindsey Hogan drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning to give the host Panthers a 1-0 lead. LaGrange tacked on another in the third on a Covenant throwing error to make it 2-0.

Covenant had chances late in the contest to get back in the game. A Lane double in the sixth inning moved runners to second and third with one out, but LaGrange starter Olivia Wolfe worked out of that jam without allowing a run. In the seventh, Kendall Whann doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch but was stranded there to end the game.

Wolfe (6-4) allowed three hits and struck out nine to pick up the pitching victory. Emily Barrs had two hits to lead LaGrange.

Lane went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and Whann added a double of her own.

Game 2: LaGrange 4, Covenant 0

In the nightcap, LaGrange hit three solo home runs and again used excellent pitching to stymie the Covenant offense in a 4-0 win over the Lady Scots.

Covenant had three hits in game two with Lane, Brett and Madison Quirk each recording one. Cori Hilt (0-1) made her first start of the year and went 3.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

LaGrange starter Dani Gravett (4-0) pitched a complete-game and had one of the three Panthers long balls. Gravett struck out five and gave up three hits in the circle and went 1-for-3 with a homer at the dish. Barrs went 2-for-2 with a home run and Danielle Newbern connected on a solo homer.

Covenant will be back home on Tuesday when it faces Wesleyan in non-conference action. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. Covenant swept a doubleheader from Wesleyan earlier this season.
