Paul Bryant Hutchings, 58, of Hixson died on Monday, March 23, 2015. 

He was born in Marblehead, MA to Glendon and Amy Christenson Hutchings. Following high school graduation, Paul proudly and dutifully served in the United States Marine Corps, having served on a ship stationed outside Cuba near the end of the Vietnam War.

In 1982, Paul joined the Montpelier Police Department in Montpelier, VT and later transferred to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Montpelier where he served as chief deputy until his retirement in 1997. He continued with a career in law enforcement conducting investigations for the Vermont Secretary of State and District Attorney’s Office. In 2000, he accepted an overseas assignment in Europe, training police officers in Kosovo. In 2004, he served as an international police instructor at the Jordanian International Police Training Center in Amman, Jordan. In 2005, he returned to Kosovo to serve as deputy police commissioner of Operations for the UNMIK Police Force. In May, 2008 Paul worked for the Department of Defense USMA in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, tasked with integrating civilian police with military police practices.

He joined the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office in 2010.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gylzan;  daughter, Serena both of Hixson; daughter, Crystal (Shawn) Harvey of Barre, VT, and daughter, Amy (Stephen) McDonald of Williamstown, VT;  two grandchildren, Aurora and Elias Harvey of Barre, VT;  two brothers, Steven (Kathleen) Hutchings and David Hutchings of Belfast, ME; and other dear relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 26, at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Sheriff Jim Hammond and Director G.A. Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Captain Lynn Triplett, Lt. Max Templeton, Lt. Chuck Gaston, Detective Rodger Brown, John Scruggs and Jim Hammond serving as pallbearers.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made in Paul’s memory to AEGIS Law Enforcement Foundation, 735 Broad Street, Suite 309, Chattanooga, TN 37402.
