Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week when Christians remember the last week of Jesus’ life. The children in attendance on March 29 at First Christian Church will participate in the traditional processional of palms at the beginning of worship starting at 10:45 a.m. This tradition of laying palms symbolized a welcome to Jesus as he arrived for Passover. The worship scriptures for Palm Sunday include Mark 1:1-11 and Psalm 118:25-29 followed by the proclamation entitled “Parades” presented by Interim Pastor Mark Calvert Rosenberger. Holy Communion will be observed and complete the service before the children meet in the churchyard for an annual Easter egg hunt at 12:15 p.m.
The church plans a special Maundy Thursday service on Thursday, April 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. A Labyrinth will be set up in the Faith Connections room. It will be open Thursday prior to the service and ONLY on Friday and Saturday mornings. The lobby of the main church entrance facing the parking lot will be a key gathering spot. Members and visitors may enjoy refreshments prior to experiencing the silence and meditation of the Labyrinth in preparation for the service that begins at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Chancel Choir will perform John Rutter’s “Requiem” accompanied by a chamber orchestra and organist Russell Draeger. Holy Communion also will be observed. During the Last Supper as Jesus prepared for his death, he told his disciples to remember him. They broke and ate bread to symbolize his broken body and drank wine to symbolize the blood he shed for them. All are welcome at the table.
