Dr. Jerome Boone
Lee University’s Dr. Jerome Boone presented his paper, “Worship in the Torah,” at the annual meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies in Lakeland, Fla.
The SPS meeting was hosted by Southeastern University. The theme of the conference was “Global Spirit: Pentecostals and the World.” It included times of worship as well as learning and networking. Guest speakers and paper presentations were welcomed as part of the meeting.
Dr. Boone’s presentation explored the themes of worship seen in the Torah and also expanded on his 2014 presentation of “Reflections on Worship in the Torah.” He discussed the relational nature of worship evident in the covenant, motives for worship, the role of rituals in worship, and the transformational nature of worship.
“Attending the SPS conference has a double benefit,” Dr. Boone said. “It provides a place to be enriched by the excellent academic work of others who share insights that inspire faithfulness to the ‘Missio Dei’ (Mission of God), and it deepens our relationship with God, as well as being a place to share new discoveries about God’s Word and Christian faith.”
The SPS began in 1970, and is an organization that provides a forum for discussion between scholars in all academic disciplines. According to their website, the purpose of the society is to stimulate, encourage, recognize, and publicize the work of Pentecostal and Charismatic scholars and scholars of Pentecostalism.
Dr. Boone, professor of Old Testament and Christian formation, joined the Lee faculty in 1976 and customarily teaches Biblical studies, Mission of the Church, Old Testament Theology, and Christian Formation. His current research interests lie in the area of Pentateuch, Old Testament prophets and the Bible’s perspective on worship.
Dr. Boone received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1982 for his outstanding classroom performance and the Excellence in Scholarship Award in 1997. Attesting to his continuous research and scholarly publication, Dr. Boone earned an Appalachian College Association Research Grant.
Dr. Boone is originally from Detroit, Mi. He is married to Sandi, and has two adult children, Darla and David. He enjoys reading, hiking, camping, and traveling. Dr. Boone also enjoys teaching in mission Bible schools, having taught seminars in schools on four continents: South America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
