Covenant Men And Women Blanked By N.C. Wesleyan

The Covenant men's tennis team had an upset over one USA South power on Friday, but could not make it two in a row on Saturday as the Scots fell to North Carolina Wesleyan 9-0 at the Covenant Tennis Complex. The visitors also shutout Covenant's women's team 9-0.

Covenant men drop to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the USA South.

N.C. Wesleyan goes to 7-4 on the year and remains perfect at 5-0 inside the conference.

N.C. Wesleyan took control of the match with wins at all three doubles positions. Chris Cox went three sets in singles play but fell 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 2 to Fernano Nardelli. Matthew Harvie hung tough at the No. 1 position but was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Pabio Pereira.

The loss is the third consecutive for the Lady Scots who fall to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in league play. N.C. Wesleyan remains perfect in the USA South at 5-0 and goes to 5-2 overall.

The visiting Battling Bishops cruised to three wins in doubles and Covenant could not rally in singles matches losing all six. Gracie Smith hung with Valeria Berber at No. 4 singles before falling 6-2, 6-3. Claire Luger dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles to Rachel Hui.

Covenant will try to get back on the winning track on Monday when it travels to face Birmingham Southern. The twice-postponed match is slated to start at 5 p.m. EDT.
