Mariana Hernandez Gutierrez
Focused. Determined. Respected. Those are three of several characteristics students and teachers at Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy (CGLA) use to describe Mariana Hernandez Gutierrez. The CGLA senior was selected by the American Lung Association as a 2015 Young Women of Distinction recipients.
According to the ALA, a Young Woman of Distinction is a high school senior who sets herself apart as an individual outstanding in leadership, academics, and character. The nominee serves the Chattanooga area with honor, integrity, enthusiasm, generosity, compassion, a willingness to take risks and a personal dedication to goal achievement. This year, five young women will be honored at the 30th annual awards luncheon on April 24, benefitting the work of the American Lung Association of Tennessee.
“Mariana has demonstrated her leadership qualities through her dedication to her academics while involved in various extracurricular activities,” said CGLA Associate Principal Maryo Beck. “She is on the Honor Roll, president of the Student Government Association, a member of the National Beta Club, and a Peer Mediator.”
Away from school, Marianna works at the East Lake Recreation Center, volunteers with First Centenary’s Inner City Ministries and she also participates in Mayor Andy Berke’s Chattanooga Ambassadors Program.
Mariana is the daughter of Joserina Gutierrez. Her post-secondary goals are to pursue a career in international relations.
