The Southern Lit Alliance Writers in Classrooms outreach program brings acclaimed authors directly to Chattanooga area students in their schools. This year, over 20 writers will visit public and private high schools and colleges in Hamilton County to teach a class on one of their own books.
The writers span all genres, including fiction, nonfiction, drama and poetry. Teachers have incorporated the writers’ work into their curriculum and students are provided copies of the text for study. They are encouraged to engage in discussion with the author, and to learn about the creative process of writing as well as thematic elements of the book.
Participating authors include Richard Bausch, who will visit East Hamilton High School; Megan Mayhew Bergman, who will visit Girls' Preparatory School; Jill McCorkle, who will visit Soddy Daisy High School; Randall Kenan who will visit Howard High School; and Padgett Powell who will visit Cleveland State Community College.
The authors participating in the Writers in Classrooms program are members of the Fellowship of Southern Writers and its 2015 award winners. They will be in Chattanooga from April 16-18 for the Celebration of Southern Literature—a festival full of readings, social events, book signings and more.
The Celebration of Southern Literature is presented by the Southern Lit Alliance. For more information on the Southern Lit Alliance, the 2015 Celebration of Southern Literature and the Writers in Classrooms program, visit www.SouthernLitAlliance.org.
