Chattanooga State Welding Student Named AWS Winner

  • Monday, March 30, 2015

Josh Sable, 31, a second semester welding student in the Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Chattanooga State, won first place in the 4G plate overhead position during the sixth annual regional welding competition sponsored by the American Society of Welding recently held in Soddy-Daisy.

Of the approximately 50-60 competitors, Mr. Sable was one of six or seven students who also became certified in AWS D 1.1 during the competition. He was awarded a $100 cash prize and a Victor Torch set for his winning performance.

“This is the second year in a row that a student from Mr. Holland’s class has placed first in this competition. The program is outstanding and I could not ask for a better instructor,” said Mr. Sable, who has always wanted a vocational career and hopes that the welding diploma he will receive in August will lead to nuclear trade work following graduation.

Associate Instructor Garry Holland stated, "Mr. Sable has all the fundamental strengths required to excel in his field: excellence of craft, self-motivation and the desire to work hard to get ahead."

When the competition was first mentioned to Mr. Holland’s class, Mr. Sable was the first one to say, “I want to win.”
