Agencies dealing with two arrests of Cleveland Police Department officer Jeffrey Griggs in two counties say they are coordinating their efforts to prevent overlap.
One of the arrests involved a confrontation with then-Cleveland Police Chief Dennis Maddux, who was in a police car with the wife of Officer Griggs. Maddux was afterward demoted to captain.
It was announced Thursday that effective immediately, he has been placed on paid administrative leave during the course of the investigation, which is being conducted jointly by the District Attorney's Office and the Cleveland Police Department.
District Attorney Steve Crump said, "Deputies of the McMinn County Sheriff s Department arrested Cleveland Police Department officer Jeffrey Griggs on Saturday.
"Griggs was charged with a single count of assault involving domestic violence. Subsequent events and ancillary investigations have now involved the Bradley County Sheriff s Office, the Cleveland Police Department, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and this office.
"On Wednesday, the local agencies conferred to develop a plan to avoid duplication or overlap within the investigations. Each agency will continue to independently complete investigations of their particular matters, but will communicate with each other so as to prevent unneeded duplication of tasks.
"The Office of the District Attorney General will coordinate the efforts of the agencies so as to minimize overlap. The Cleveland Police Department has asked and this office has agreed to perform an internal affairs investigation relating to all of the events of the past week. This investigation will be kept separate and apart from the ongoing criminal investigations and the findings or results of the internal affairs investigation will be presented to the Cleveland Police Department and the City Manager and the City Attorney for their consideration and action."
