  • Friday, March 6, 2015

The Covenant men's tennis team got back to .500 by turning in a convincing performance in a 9-0 victory over Greensboro in a USA South conference match on Friday afternoon.

Covenant moves to 2-2 on the year, 1-0 in conference play. It is Greensboro's first match of the season as they fall to 0-1 on the year and in conference play.

Chris Cox and Roy Anderson each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0, Cox from the No. 2 slot and Anderson from the No. 6.

Two other Scots, No. 1 Matthew Harvie and No. 4 John Granholm each won one of their sets 6-0 and took down their opponents in two sets, while Dan Madden, from the No. 5 spot, won his sets by identical 6-2 scores.

No. 3 singles player Michael O'Brien had the toughest opponent, going three sets with Kyle Gatti before taking the victory 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

The Scots also blanked the Pride in two of their doubles matches, from the second and third spots (O'Brien/Madden and Anderson/Travis Hutchinson, respectively). The No. 1 doubles team, featuring Cox and Harvie defeated Zach Passman and Gatti 9-8 (4-2) in a tightly contested match.

Covenant hopes to carry the momentum from its victory into tomorrow when they travel to Virginia to face Ferrum at 10 a.m. before making the short trip over to face Lynchburg at 4 p.m.

The women's team also won convincingly 9-0.

Covenant (3-1, 1-0 USA South) was aided by three forfeit victories, two in singles play and one in doubles, as Greensboro had just four players able to compete. Still, the Lady Scots had no trouble dispatching the Pride (0-1, 0-1 USA South) in the other matches.

Gretchen Rowe and Claire Luger teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win over Kathryn Roper and Ashley Spivey of Greensboro. Gracie Smith and Jennie Spielman took an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position over Molly O'Keeffe and Margaret Dubey.

In singles play, Rowe and Spielman each recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories. Annie DeLuca bested Dubey 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot and Lindsay Geving rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over O'Keeffe at No. 3.

Covenant will be back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches in Virginia. The Lady Scots play USA South member Ferrum at 10 a.m. and then travel to face Lynchburg at 4 p.m.
