The History and Legacy of the Maclellan Family in Chattanooga is CAHA Program on March 14

  • Monday, March 9, 2015

Hugh Maclellan and Tom McCallie  will present a program at the next meeting of the Chattanooga Area Historical Association on Saturday, March 14 at 1pm ET.   The event will be in the Roosevelt Ballroom of the Chattanooga Choo-Choo.

Thomas Maclellan, a native of Scotland, moved from Nova Scotia to Chattanooga in 1892 and purchased half of the Provident Life and Accident Insurance Companies. Provident was unique in its willingness to insure the “uninsurables,” those working in mines, mills, and furnaces.

These workers often suffered tragic injuries and even death and Provident’s reputation for providing financial wellbeing for these workers and their families became storied.

As a result, Provident thrived as did the Maclellan family. Thomas’s commitment to serving the poor and giving back to his community carried over to his daughter, Dora Maclellan Brown, who established the Maclellan Foundation. For over half a century, the Maclellan family has focused on supporting Christian causes at home and around the world.
