Covenant Tennis Teams Top Maryville

On a perfect afternoon for tennis, the Covenant women's tennis team snapped out of a four-match losing streak with a 7-2 victory over Maryville in USA South action at the Covenant Tennis Complex.

Covenant swept the doubles portion of the match and took four of the six singles matches for the win. The Lady Scots go to 8-5 on the year and 5-2 in conference play, while Maryville drops to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the USA South.

Gretchen Rowe and Claire Luger teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while doubles teams of Annie DeLuca and Lindsay Geving along with Gracie Smith and Jennie Spielman also took wins. DeLuca and Geving won 8-4 at No. 2 and Smith and Spielman were 8-5 winners at the No. 3 spot.

Maryville took two singles matches, but Covenant was able to hold off the visiting Scots. Luger had the match-clincher at No. 2 with her 6-1, 6-2 win over Kayla Lewis. DeLuca shutout Madison Reilly 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 5 position, Geving went into a second set tiebreak to come away with a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory and Spielman ended the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6.

Covenant will be back on the road on Friday when they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to face Huntingdon. Match time is set for 11 a.m.

 

The Covenant men's tennis team swept doubles and took five singles matches to defeat Maryville 8-1 in USA South action on Wednesday afternoon at the Covenant Tennis Complex.

The victory pushes the Scots to 7-6 overall and 4-2 inside the USA South. Maryville remains winless in league play at 0-5 and 2-5 on the year.

The Scots scored a pair of 8-4 wins in doubles play as Michael O'Brien and Dan Madden won at No. 2 while Roy Anderson and Travis Hutchinson won by the same margin at the No. 3 spot. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox had little difficulty at the No. 1 position as they bested Maryville's duo of Daniel Silva and Koki Agata 8-1.

In singles play, O'Brien took a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Agata at No. 2 for the Scots' fourth point. John Granholm clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Gabriel Rodriguez. Connor Shimmel knocked off Dakota McMahan 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.

Three third set super-tiebreaks followed and Covenant would take two of those. Cox defeated Silva 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 at the No. 1 spot and Anderson notched a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win at No. 4 over Braxton Lang. Maryville's lone point came at No. 6 as Nathan Hernandez fell 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 to Will Martalla.

Covenant will be back on the road on Friday when they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to face Huntingdon. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
