The Covenant men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 6-3 victory over Averett on Friday morning in Danville.
With the victory, Covenant clinches a spot in the USA South tournament for the first time. The tournament will take place next weekend in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Scots stand at 8-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The five conference wins sets a program record.
Covenant took all three doubles to grab a 3-0 lead heading into the singles round. No. 1 duo of Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox knocked off Averett's James Wright and Nicolas Quevedo 8-0, while Michael O'Brien and Dan Madden took an 8-6 win at No.
2. Covenant took a default win at No. 3.
Harvie had the match-clincher in singles at the No. 1 spot as he defeated Alexander Terentiev 6-3, 6-0. O'Brien went three sets with Quevedo before prevailing 7-5, 0-6, 10-4. With Averett playing just five players, Covenant took another default win at No. 6 singles.
Covenant will now await its seeding and opponent in the USA South tournament.
